Sure there is Netflix and Youtube, but technically these are paid services. Soon they won't be able to watch these types of educational shows anymore if funding really does get cut. I think about my little cousins who enjoy watching Dinosaur Train and Wild Kratts ( I loved how the Kratts brothers from Zoboomafoo came back with another awesome and educational show!). This investment is critical to providing every American with free access to public media - a proven, reliable source of in-depth and informative journalism, award-winning educational children’s programming, and vital programming about history, culture and high quality and meaningful drama. Without this critical funding, local stations may be forced to go off-air or to drastically cut the content and services our communities rely on. The President’s budget proposal to Congress recommends cutting public media funding. But it looks like I won't be seeing my beloved PBS for much longer. In fact I have to say, PBS was one of the greatest influences in my decision to double major in journalism and plant science.Įven though I have cable now, I still flip through the channels and choose PBS. PBS introduced me to some of my favorite programs of all time like The Phantom of the Opera (25th anniversary at Albert Hall), Agatha Christie's "Hercule Poirot", and Sherlock.Īs a homeschooler I used to love watching PBS documentaries. They were both exceptionally educational and entertaining, and what I learned through PBS, I remember till this day. From Sesame Street, Electric Company, and Mister Rogers to Antique Roadshow, Frontline, and Nova. My brother and I grew up watching PBS, and still do.
